Chinese Red and Gilt Roundel of Brocade

Chinese Red silk dragon roundel of brocade silk and gilt decoration.
The design shows a pair of four toed confronting dragons and a pair of red headed cranes to the top. the centre has a large ornate lotus flower and the sides are defined by ruyi headed clouds and ruyi headed lotus.
both dragons and red headed cranes are associated with Emperor. A pair of cranes are also the wish for a long and fruitful marriage and represent longevity.
four toed dragons were reserved for nobles and High officials.
Red is found every where during chinese New year and special occasions like weddings, but is more associated with good fortune and joy and is banned from funerals.
